Programs to Promote Migrant Literacy:

Volunteers in the Migrant Literacy Project teach reading and writing and English as a Second Language to Hispanic adults and children temporarily living in area migrant camps. Localities vary depending on season and growing schedules. Most camps are about 1/2 an hour drive away from Lansing. Carpooling is available.

Components of the Migrant Literacy Project include:

  • Helping adults and children improve their basic reading and writing skills
  • Tutoring for adults who need to learn to speak English and improve their English skills
  • Guidance in searching for jobs and increased income
  • G.E.D. Preparation
  • Vision screening tests
  • Access to internet via laptop computers

Benefits of Volunteering:

  • This program provides an excellent opportunity to work with and understand another culture.
  • Independent study credit for students is available from Michigan State University.
  • Although speaking Spanish is not a requirement to volunteer, you may learn speaking skills or improve the skills you have.
