Growing Readers workshops provide suggestions and materials to help parents and caregivers expand children's language and concepts by tying activities to popular children's books readily available in libraries and bookstores.
Each week families, with children age 3- 7, are given folders to take home. Each folder contains a child's book, instructions and materials for various activities related to the book. They are also provided resource materials on literacy.
We provide one-time presentations at local residential programs for single mothers and to area high school teens who are parents.
The importance of reading is widely understood. Growing Readers is rich in suggestions, techniques to expand learning to help a child become ready for school, and the enjoyment of books.
Books are given out in all of CALC's programs to help families build their home library.
Prime Time is a weekly program of reading discussion and storytelling for parents and their children, ages 6-11.
Award-winning children's books introduce stories about issues that children encounter as well as tales from history told for children. Parents and their children are guided as they discuss history, literature and ethical issues such as: fairness, greed, honor and honesty.
Prime Time reinforces the role of the family in confronting moral and ethical issues. Families are encouraged to bond around the act of reading and learning. Each week children select books that they may keep to begin a library at home.
