Refugees and immigrants from 29 countries are receiving English instruction at the Capital Area Literacy Coalition. Some have no English at all, while others have varying degrees of proficiency. We offer one on one instruction as well as classes.
Tutors who have completed the Adult Basic Literacy Workshop are invited to take an additional session in teaching English. CALC provides a wide range of materials for students and tutors including tapes, videos, interactive computer programs, manuals and card readers.
Students are interviewed to assess their oral English levels as well as their reading, writing and spelling abilities. They are also asked for their short-term and long-term goals. A translator is used when necessary.
Students who wish to become citizens are tutored to help them pass the citizenship tests. We have materials on hand that CALC tutors can borrow from our adult library.
